# Save what you read: from the browser, from email or from chat.

The Web Clipper sends the page you are reading into your workspace without leaving it, and also what you build with Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini. You can also forward an email to your workspace's address or send a link to the chat bot. However it comes in, it lands in Memory → Clips.

## From the browser

### Installing and connecting it

It installs from the Chrome Web Store and lands as a button in the browser toolbar. It works in Chrome, Edge, Brave, Arc and the other Chromium-based browsers; not in Safari or Firefox yet.

[Install the Web Clipper](https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/secondbrain-web-clipper/aandjckpdnmigoghfabjdkajgaihcpkc)

1. **You install it** — One click in the store. It asks for no permission on any site.
2. **You hit "Connect with Secondbrain"** — Your workspace opens, already knows who you are, and hands the permission to the extension. Nothing to copy or paste.
3. **Done** — Clips go to your workspace. If pairing cannot run — another browser, a signed-out session — there is an option under the button to paste a code by hand.

To disconnect it, in the popup itself: Settings → Disconnect.

### The three ways to save

Hit the icon and this opens:

![The Web Clipper popup over an article: Article, Selection or Link only, a note and "Let the AI decide"](https://www.onsecondbrain.com/screens/guide/clipper.png)

- Article saves the readable content, without menus or banners. It is the default.
- Selection, only what you highlighted on the page.
- Link only, the URL, for what you have not read yet.

You can leave a note and choose which document it goes under, or let the AI decide. At the top, the pill says which workspace it saves into.

| Shortcut | What it does |
| --- | --- |
| ⌘⇧S / Ctrl+Shift+S | Opens the clipper on the current page |
| ⌘⇧E / Ctrl+Shift+E | Saves the page without opening the popup |
| ⌘↵ | Save, with the popup open |

There is a right-click menu too: on the page, on a selection, or on a link you never opened.

### Why an extension and not a box to paste URLs into

The extension saves the page exactly as you are seeing it: what sits behind a login, what loaded as you scrolled, what is only visible because you dismissed the cookie notice. A pasted URL is opened by someone with no session, who hits the paywall or a blank page.

You can still save a link without opening it, from the right-click menu or the + in Clips. If it needs a session, it will come in trimmed.

### Artifacts from Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini

In a Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini conversation, the extension also saves what the model built — a prototype, a deck, a document — as an artifact: an exact copy that works just as it does in the chat.

You switch it on once, in the popup: Settings → Notices in Claude and ChatGPT. From then on, if the artifact you have open — or one the model just created — is not saved, this shows up at the bottom right:

![The Secondbrain notice: "There is an artifact you have not saved", with Not now and Save](https://www.onsecondbrain.com/screens/guide/artefactos-claude.png)

- **Claude** — Artifacts — HTML, React, SVG, diagrams, documents and code —, the files it created, and Slides and Docs.
- **ChatGPT** — Canvases. Code ones are rendered if they are HTML, React, SVG or Mermaid.
- **Gemini** — The open canvas, when it is a document. Code ones, not yet.

What you save updates itself when it changes in the chat — even if you also changed it in Secondbrain — and what was there before stays in Versions. In the popup's Artifacts tab you see the state of each copy and switch it from Auto to Manual, which asks before updating.

They land in Memory → Clips, under the Origin → Artifacts filter; how they open, keep versions and get published is in Memory. From any AI client they can also be saved through the MCP connector.

### What the extension cannot do

- It reads no site on its own: it enters a tab only when you press the button. The one exception is one you switch on, artifact notices, which look at Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini and nothing else.
- It only saves into your workspace, or another one of yours that you pick in the popup.
- Only your workspace can connect it: no other site can talk to it.

## By email and chat

### Forward an email or subscribe a newsletter

Every workspace has its own email address, along the lines of clip+your-space-a1b2c3@onsecondbrain.com, and whatever lands there enters Clips just like a page. You find it in Memory → Clips: the extension button, at the foot of the list, opens a window with "Or forward an email".

- **Forward what reached you** — The thread where a decision was made, a booking, the email you do not want to lose.
- **Subscribe a newsletter** — Subscribe with the workspace address and every issue comes in on its own, already read. If it asks you to confirm, the confirmation arrives as a clip too.
- **Automate the forwarding** — A Gmail or Outlook rule that sends everything from a sender there: the weekly report, the vendor alert.

- For a forward, the clip is filed under the original sender — the newsletter, the vendor — not your mailbox.
- The subject comes in without the Fwd:, FW: and Re:.
- If the email is "look at this" plus a link, the clip is that page.
- Attachments are not saved: the body of the email comes in.

> **Two addresses**
>
> The workspace one asks nothing of whoever sends: the address is the credential, which is why it works for filters and newsletters. If it leaks, you generate another and the old one stops working.
>
> clip@onsecondbrain.com on its own only accepts emails that genuinely come from your account's mailbox.

Up to 60 emails per hour get in per workspace. If one cannot get in — the address was rotated, the sender could not be verified — it bounces with the reason.

### A link to the bot

Send the WhatsApp or Telegram bot a bare link — or one with a short phrase — and it is saved as a clip, just like from the extension. An email shared from your phone gets in too, as an email clip. The bot replies with the title and the link to the clip.

A long paragraph that happens to mention a link does not count: that is a note, and it goes to the daily note.

## What you end up with

### What happens after saving

The popup closes right away and the reading continues in the background. In one pass, the AI pulls out:

- A summary and three to six key points.
- A short title, if the original is a fourteen-word headline.
- The clip type — Article, Documentation, Research, Video… —: what the page is, not what it is about.
- The Atlas entities it mentions: projects, organizations, people and topics.
- The document it would go under, which you accept or dismiss. Nothing moves on its own.

Saving the same thing twice — a page or an email — updates the clip, it does not duplicate it.

### Clips in the app

They live in Memory → Clips, and the list filters by origin — Web, Mail, Artifacts —, by type, by site and by entities. Each clip opens with its Summary and the Page, as it was the day you saved it; the original opens in the browser from its link.
